2007 Year in Review:

Special Elections


1. 14th Worcester State Representative District: To fill the vacancy left by James Leary. District includes West Boylston and parts of Worcester . Democrat James O’Day won the March 20th Primary against 3 other candidates, and went on to win the April 17th General against an Independent candidate. O’Day was the endorsed candidate of the Mass. AFL-CIO.

2. 11th Norfolk State Representative District: To fill the vacancy left by Robert Coughlin. District covers Dedham, Westwood and part of Walpole .Stephen Bilafer won the 4-way Democratic Primary on April 17th, after which the Mass. AFL-CIO endorsed him. Independent Paul McMurty won the May 15th General, after which he switched his party enrollement to Democrat.

3. First Suffolk and Middlesex Senate District: To fill the vacancy left by Robert Travaglini. District includes East Boston, Winthrop, parts of Revere and Cambridge . Then Rep. Anthony Petruccelli became Senator-elect when he won the 2-way Democratic Primary on May 29th, and went unchallenged in the June 26th General.

4. 5th Congressional District: To fill the vacancy left by Marty Meehan. District includes all of the Merrimack Valley . Niki Tsongas won the 5-way Democratic Primary on September 4th, and went on to win in a close General Election against Republican Jim Ogonowski on October 16th. The Mass. AFL-CIO did not endorse in the Primary, but worked very hard for Niki Tsongas in the General Election to ensure her victory.

5. Middlesex, Suffolk and Essex Senate District: To fill the vacancy left by Jarrett Barrios. District includes parts of Cambridge, Somerville, Revere, Everett, Chelsea, Allston-Brighton and Saugus . Democrat Anthony Galluccio was elected State Senator on September 11th in the Primary Election (there was no challenger in the General Election). The Mass. AFL-CIO endorsed Anthony Galluccio in the Primary. He is now the Chair of the important Public Service Committee.

6. 1st Suffolk State Representative District: To fill the vacancy left by now Senator Anthony Petruccelli. District covers East Boston . Democrat Carlo Basile was elected State Representative on September 25th in the Primary Election (there was no challenger in the General Election). The Mass. AFL-CIO did not endorse in this race.

7. Fourth Middlesex Senate District: To fill the vacancy left by Robert Havern. District includes Arlington, Billerica, Burlington, and most of Woburn and Lexington. Rep. James Marzilli won the November 13th 4-way Democratic Primary. The Mass. AFL-CIO endorsed runner-up, Brother Ken Donnelly in this Primary Marzilli won the General Election on December 11th.
