2010 Endorsement Process

Click here to see the endorsements made by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO.  A final round of endorsements will be made on September 22 once the Primary Election is over.

Below is the process candidates and incumbents seeking the endorsement of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO must go through as the State Federation seeks to determine the best candidates for working families.

INCUMBENT STATE LEGISLATORS:
Incumbents seeking to be endorsed for re-election must meet the following criteria: have at least a 75% Labor Voting Record from 2007-2010, have sent a letter formally requesting endorsement, and have completed the 2010 State Legislative Questionnaire. The next round of Labor Votes will be determined at the August 19th Executive Council C.O.P.E. meeting, where final Labor Voting Records for 2007-2010 will be established. These final Labor Voting Records will be made public after that time. Incumbent legislators with challenges seeking re-endorsement will also be taken up at our C.O.P.E. meeting on August 19th. The Executive Council may choose to table any endorsements involving incumbents until later C.O.P.E. meetings, and once the primary is over, there will be another C.O.P.E. meeting to consider whatever candidates and races have not yet been taken up.

STATE LEGISLATIVE OPEN SEATS AND CHALLENGERS:
Candidates running for open seats or challenging incumbents must submit a letter requesting endorsement and must complete the Massachusetts AFL-CIO State Legislative Questionnaire. We also urge each candidate to meet with the appropriate Central Labor Council(s). Open seat or challenger candidates must complete these requirements to be considered at the Mass. AFL-CIO Executive Council C.O.P.E. meeting on August 19th.

CONGRESSIONAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL SEATS
Incumbents in Congress need only to submit a request in writing to the Massachusetts AFL-CIO to be considered for endorsement for re-election. These same rules apply to constitutional incumbents except in the case of the Governor’s race. For the open seat in the 10th Congressional District, the open seats for State Treasurer and State Auditor, and the contested gubernatorial election, all candidates must complete the following requirements: submit request for endorsement in writing, complete the appropriate questionnaire (either the Congressional Questionnaire or the Constitutional Office Questionnaire), and participate in the Mass. AFL-CIO debates that will be held for each of these seats at the Gompers-Murray-Meany Conference on June 24th and 25th. The Executive Council may choose to table any endorsements involving incumbents until later C.O.P.E. meetings, and once the primary is over, there will be another C.O.P.E. meeting at our fall Convention to consider whatever candidates have not yet been taken up.
