The following is from a press release by the Coalition of Labor Union Women:
THE COALITION OF LABOR UNION WOMEN APPLAUDS NOMINATION OF SONIA SOTOMAYOR TO THE SUPREME COURT
Statement by Marsha Zakowski, National President
Coalition of Labor Union Women
Washington, DC – May 26, 2009 – “President Obama has made an excellent choice in his nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the U.S. Supreme Court. She is one of the most experienced and qualified nominees for Supreme Court Justice and in the President’s words, a ‘brilliant individual’.
Judge Sotomayor was born in the South Bronx of New York City. Her father, a tool-and-dye worker, died when she was nine years old. She was raised by her mother, a nurse, who stressed the value of education. She was valedictorian at her high school graduation, earned a B.A. from Princeton University and her J.D. from Yale Law School.
Judge Sotomayor has ruled on several high profile cases. Her judicial decisions and opinions demonstrate her empathy with people and how laws affect and make a difference in their lives. She was first appointed to the federal bench in 1991 by President George H. W. Bush and to the federal appeals bench by President Bill Clinton in 1997.
When confirmed, Judge Sotomayor will be the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the Supreme Court. She will take the seat of departing Justice David Souter.
We applaud President Obama’s selection of a fair, just, tough-minded, hard-working and impeccably credentialed candidate for the SupremeCourt. “
