Lilly Ledbetter at the State House in Support of Paid Sick Days

Start: 04/01/2010 - 2:30pm

End: 04/01/2010 - 3:00pm

Lilly Ledbetter, a production supervisor at a Goodyear tire plant in Alabama, filed an equal-pay lawsuit regarding pay discrimination, six months before her early retirement in 1998. The Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that Lilly's complaint was filed beyond the 180 days when she was first discriminated against, even though she did not receive equal pay throughout her entire career. This was corrected by the Lilly Ledbetter Equal Pay Act, which was the first bill signed into law by President Obama. Now a woman can sue within 180 days of any paycheck that pays her unequally.

How does this relate to paid sick days? The lack of paid sick days is just another way in which woman, as primary care takers of their families, lose pay when they stay home to take care of a family member.
Lilly Ledbetter, this crusader against pay discrimination against women, will be at the State House on April 1 to show her support for Paid Sick Days.
WHERE: The State House, Great Hall
WHEN: Thursday April 1 from 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Jobs Not Greed!
Taking on Corporate Power!
Massachusetts Jobs With Justice
2010 Annual Dinner
March 25, 2010

6:00 PM - Suffolk Downs

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

2009 was a year of change and a hoped for new direction for our country. But corporations went on the attack to keep real change from happening. Jobs With Justice has been on the front lines, fighting corporate greed and taking on the big banks and insurance companies. Here in Massachusetts and across the country working people are beginning to stand up and fight back, demanding a voice on the job and a better life for themselves and their families.

Please join Jobs with Justice on March 25 as we celebrate the past year of fighting for workers’ rights and look forward to a year of building an economy that works for everyone.

We will be honoring those who took on corporate power including:

The Angelica Workers, UFCW Local 1445 and Centro Presente for fighting for a better life for immigrant workers.

Hospitals Campaign, 1199 SEIU NE and the Area Trades Council for organizing the unorganized and improving the lives of health care workers.

The Hyatt 100 and UNITE HERE Local 26 for fighting back against corporate greed.

City Life/Vida Urbana Bank Tennant Association for taking on predatory lenders and keeping workers in their homes. And young people who are the future.

The John O’Connor Youth Activism Award to MassCosh Teens Lead at Work

Our special guest this year will be Joanne Goldstein, Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development. We also will be remembering two strong leaders in the struggle who we lost last year, Jerry Leary and Tim Costello.

Thank you for your commitment to workers’ rights and social justice and your generous support of Jobs With Justice.

We’ve learned that change won’t happen without a powerful grassroots movement. We’re counting on you to help make it happen!

In Solidarity,

Lilly Ledbetter worked as supervisor for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company at its Gadsden, Alabama plant from 1979 until 1998 when she took an early retirement due to the plant closing. Throughout her career she was subjected to sexual harassment, retaliation, and wage discrimination. Just before she retired, someone anonymously slipped her a note that compared her salary to that of three other male workers. Although Lilly suspected she was not being paid equally, she had signed an agreement when she was hired that she would not discuss salaries with other workers. Until the note, she had no way of knowing she was being underpaid because she was a woman. Lilly had no idea she was being underpaid. She was prohibited from asking about or talking about pay wages. She did not have tangible evidence until she was ready to retire 19 years into her employment that she was being cheated.

It's time to tell the banks to start paying for America's recovery by investing in GOOD JOBS NOW!

Dear Sir or Madam,

Segal Roitman, LLP would like to invite you to the continuation of our monthly series of educational seminars designed to assist you during the challenging times we all face.

Our next seminar will be held at the regular time of 12.30-1.30 PM on Thursday, 25 March, 2010. It will be hosted back at our regular location of our Segal Roitman law offices on 111 Devonshire Street.

The subject of this seminar will be: Union Governance. Our distinguished attorney Paul Kelly will chart a course through this multi-faceted and in-depth topic to guide you to a better understanding of the complex issues and subjects that arise with the governance of a Union. Paul will be addressing such questions as:

· What does federal law say about the way you run your union?
· How can you protect your union from having to re-run an election?
· Do you know what a CAP audit is?
· Do you know the difference between an LM-2, LM-10 and LM-30?

We’ll discuss these and other important questions on March 25. We look forward to your participation and your questions; there will be time for questions and answers during the course of the presentation. There will be a delicious free lunch served beforehand; if you wish to join us for that too, please RSVP to Jack Ravenscroft at jravenscroft@segalroitman.com.

Sincerely,
