Massachusetts AFL-CIO Resolution Praising Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor
WHEREAS, the Supreme Court of the United States is the highest court in the land; and
WHEREAS, nominations to the court should be taken with extreme care and consideration by the President, and the Senate shall act in a responsible way when advising and consenting to the President’s nomination; and
WHEREAS, President Barack Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court; and
WHEREAS, by a vote of the U.S. Senate, Judge Sotomayor was confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice; and
WHEREAS, Justice Sotomayor is the first Hispanic American Supreme Court Justice and is only the third woman ever to serve on the Court; and
WHEREAS, Justice Sotomayor is an accomplished jurist with a keen intellect who considers every decision with its long term effect on the working men and women of the nation; and
WHEREAS, Justice Sotomayor grew up in a working class family as the daughter of a factory worker, in a public a public housing project in the Bronx, New York City; and
WHEREAS, in prior rulings at various levels of the judicial system, Justice Sotomayor has rightly interpreted and been faithful to the meaning and intent of labor laws meant to protect workers and their ability to collectively bargain; and
WHEREAS, Justice Sotomayor has displayed an understanding of workers’ struggles while still remaining loyal to the law as a judge throughout her long career on the bench; therefore be it
RESOLVED that the Massachusetts AFL-CIO praises the nomination and confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court of the United States; and be it further
RESOLVED that the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will transmit a copy of this Resolution to all relevant sources in order to demonstrate its ardent support of the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
