Massachusetts AFL-CIO Resolution In Support of Raising and Indexing the Minimum Wage
 
WHEREAS, skyrocketing healthcare, utility, food, energy and housing costs continue to drive up the cost of living for average Americans; and

WHEREAS, an ailing economy has led more and more employers to lower the wages of their employees; and
 
WHEREAS, without indexing the minimum wage to the rate of inflation, workers are locked in perpetual and increasing poverty; and

WHEREAS, neither the state of Massachusetts nor the federal government have laws requiring for the indexing of the minimum wage with respect to inflation; and
 
WHEREAS, nine states have passed laws requiring annual adjustments of their minimum wage relative to the Consumer Price Index; and
 
WHEREAS, Massachusetts has not passed a law raising its minimum wage since 2006; therefore be it
 
RESOLVED that the Massachusetts AFL-CIO supports an increase in both state and national minimum wage, and be it further
 
RESOLVED that these wages are raised in accordance with the rate of inflation, determined by the consumer price index; and be it finally
 
RESOLVED that the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will transmit a copy of this resolution and other information to all relevant parties to demonstrate its ardent support for increasing and indexing the minimum wage.
