Massachusetts AFL-CIO Resolution in Support of a Scholarship to be Named After Senator Edward M. Kennedy
WHEREAS, Senator Edward M. Kennedy was the foremost champion of both Labor and higher education during his nearly half century in the United States Senate and in his important capacity as Chair of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee; and
WHEREAS, union membership and the attainment of a college degree represent the two surest ways to achieve economic security in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Senator Kennedy’s legislative achievements in education, including the Higher Education Act of 1965, the Higher Education Act of 1968, and his consistent advocacy on behalf of the federal Pell grant program, have made it easier for prospective college students to get loans and financial aid to attend college; and
WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Scholarship Program for over 51 years has given students within the commonwealth the opportunity to further their educational endeavors by making it more affordable for their dreams of higher education to be realized; therefore be it
RESOLVED that the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, in recognition of Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s contributions to the advancement of both workers’ rights and access to higher education, will name of a scholarship in honor of Senator Edward M. Kennedy to be given out annually at the Scholarship Banquet in order to help a deserving student reach their goal of a college education; and be it further
RESOLVED that the recipient of this scholarship shall be a student who identifies with the values and virtues of the labor movement and completes an essay on Senator Kennedy’s career as a labor and education advocate; and be it finally
RESOLVED that the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will transmit a copy of this Resolution to all relevant sources in order to demonstrate its ardent support of a scholarship to be named in honor of Senator Edward M. Kennedy.
