Massachusetts AFL-CIO Resolution in Support of the Target 5000 Program
 
WHEREAS, many of the decisions that most directly affect workers and our families are made at the municipal, regional, and state levels of government; and
 
WHEREAS, in furthering the cause of the Labor Movement it is necessary to have union members elected to city councils, school committees, boards of selectman, and other elected positions throughout local and regional government bodies; and
 
WHEREAS, identifying union members already serving in public office helps to further the cause of the Labor Movement by increasing the visibility of labor as well as by having the ability to reach out to fellow union members on important issues; and
 
WHEREAS, successful campaigns have been run locally in cities and towns across Massachusetts that have resulted in union members being elected to public office; and
 
WHEREAS, the Target 5000 Program helps to support union members and labor advocates who are running for public office with the goal of representing the best interests of working families; and
 
WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will be holding its first annual Union Candidate School immediately following the 2009 Constitutional Convention in order to further the goals of the Target 5000 Program; therefore be it
 
RESOLVED that the Massachusetts AFL-CIO continues to support the Target 5000 Program in order to identify elected union members that may hold public office across the state; and be it further
 
RESOLVED that through the Target 5000 Program, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will support the campaigns of union members seeking public office at all levels who share the goal of representing working family issues; and be it finally
 
RESOLVED that the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will transmit a copy of this resolution to all relevant parties in order to demonstrate its ardent support for the Target 5000 Program.
