Letters to The Editor in Support of Destination Resort Casinos
Write a Letter to the Editor
One great way to help campaign for destination resort casino legislation is to write letters to your local newspapers and regional papers expressing your support for this legislation. Most newspapers will only accept letters that are 200 words or less. Below are five sample letters to the editor that you can use. Each letter has been written from the voice of a different person - you should feel free to rewrite them in your own voice.
SAMPLE LETTER FROM CONCERNED CITIZEN TO EDITOR
(INSERT DATE)
Dear Editor,
The Commonwealth is facing a number of serious issues: financially starved cities and towns with increasing needs, unfunded state projects, crumbling infrastructure, rising unemployment rates, a stagnant job market, and few ideas about either job creation or raising public revenues. Our economy has taken a downturn with no promising signs for revival. Report after report has shown far too many Massachusetts residents are forced to leave our communities in search of work elsewhere.
We need new jobs and new sources of revenue so we can reverse the course our Commonwealth is on. Licensing destination resort casinos would create tens of thousands of jobs and increase tourism, promising real economic stimulation and growth, and hundreds of millions of dollars in public revenues. I can’t remember the last time we had such a promising opportunity with such clear and convincing guarantees of jobs, revenues and economic development benefits.
During the coming weeks our legislators will debate licensing destination resort casinos in our Commonwealth. I am urging them to say yes to quality economic development, a chance for jobs, and a chance to rebuild our communities with new revenue.
Sincerely,

SAMPLE LETTER FROM UNEMPLOYED WORKER TO THE EDITOR
(INSERT DATE)
Dear Editor,
As one of the many unemployed workers in Massachusetts, I know all too well that the state needs to create new jobs. I worked at (XX) for (XX MONTHS/YEARS) before my company had to downsize because of our slowing economy. It has been incredibly difficult to find a job in Massachusetts to support my family with.
Destination resort casinos would create high-quality jobs to employ people like myself who have been suffering as a result of the state’s economic downturn. Casinos would also create more public revenue to invest into public works projects which would also employ workers like me in stable positions.
For my family, and for many others like us, building destination resort casinos in Massachusetts would finally restore our ability to provide for ourselves. I can’t remember the last time we had the opportunity to bring so many new jobs to Massachusetts. We cannot let this chance pass us by.
Sincerely,

SAMPLE LETTER FROM A CONSTRUCTION WORKER TO THE EDITOR
(INSERT DATE)
Dear Editor,
Destination resort casinos will bring our state something we haven’t seen in far too long: thousands of new family-sustaining jobs. As a construction worker, I have seen that development projects in Massachusetts are few and far in between. Our cities and towns are facing budget crises, state projects are unfunded, and our infrastructure is crumbling.
Destination resort casinos present an opportunity to create tens of thousands of jobs as well as hundreds of millions of dollars in public revenue. I cannot remember the last time we had such a promising opportunity. Passing this legislation would be a sound and healthy move for our economy, and our families.
Our legislators should say yes to quality economic development, job creation, and a chance to invest in our communities with new revenue. They should say yes to my ability to provide for my family.
Sincerely,

SAMPLE LETTER FROM A TEACHER TO THE EDITOR
(INSERT DATE)
Dear Editor,
I have been deeply concerned about the stagnant state of our economy in Massachusetts. Our budget troubles have led to unfunded state projects, the neglect of our infrastructure, and our municipalities are barely getting by.
As a teacher I have seen personally the impact of our slowing economy on our schools. Budget cuts are squeezing our schools tighter and tighter with each year, putting our children and our future at risk. Our schools are in desperate need of public revenue to improve our educational services. Without more public revenue, our schools which should be our number one priority will undoubtedly see further budget cuts.
Licensing destination resort casinos is the right prescription for our budget troubles. By creating tens of thousands of jobs and increasing tourism, resort-style casinos promise real economic stimulation and growth, and hundreds of millions of dollars in public revenues; revenue we can rely on for years to come.
Sincerely,
