Take Back Labor Day
![]() We're gonna take back Labor Day! Why must we take back Labor Day? It is surely not in danger of going anywhere. It is a much-loved, end-of-summer institution marked on the calendars of millions of Americans. It is greatly anticipated by union workers and supporters, as well as by those who are apathetic towards labor issues, and even those who shamefully call themselves anti-union, but still enjoy a nice day at the beach. That is why we must take back our day. As people reap the rewards of years of struggle by workers, both in the workplace, and in enjoying their national day of recognition, we must instill in them the true meaning of Labor Day: To honor the union men and women, who through their struggles, have earned the workplace rights and privileges that make this country a better place to live. What we are doing to take back Labor Day For the second year in a row, Massachusetts AFL-CIO President Robert J. Haynes threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the September 1st Boston Red Sox Labor Day game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. The occasion was the highlight of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO’s Second Annual Take Back Labor Day campaign, which included a radio ad to Red Sox fans before every game of the season featuring the state AFL-CIO and six local union affiliates. The ad was a central feature of the public education campaign about the true contributions and mission of organized labor in Massachusets. Additional in-game ads of 15-30 seconds also promoted the true meaning and significance of Labor Day and what the Labor Movement has given to this country.
