Massachusetts AFL-CIO: Secretary of State Bill Galvin is Working Families' Candidate
Massachusetts AFL-CIO: Secretary of State Bill Galvin Deserves Re-Election MALDEN, MA – The Massachusetts AFL-CIO, the largest labor organization in Massachusetts, made a point today to highlight its endorsement of Secretary of State Bill Galvin in his contested bid for re-election. On June 22, 2006 the Executive Council of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO voted to endorse Secretary Galvin based on his long career of standing up and fighting for the working people of the Commonwealth. The endorsement of Secretary Galvin is notable because this year Secretary of State is the only other Constitutional office in which there is a contested primary besides the race for the Corner Office. It is rare that Constitutional offices go without competition, and the challenge of sometimes Democrat John Bonifaz against the highly qualified, worthy, and lifelong Democrat Galvin has brought about a surge of labor support for the incumbent. “I have known Bill Galvin a long time and he is one of the smartest people in government today,” stated Massachusetts AFL-CIO President Robert J. Haynes. “Secretary Galvin is frankly the best Secretary of State ever. He has been a tremendous champion for working people his entire career.” Secretary Galvin has mastered using the Secretary of State’s office to keep corporate greed in check, highlight the transgressions of the business community against working people, and to particularly fight to protect workers’ pensions and retirement security – all proof of his commitment to the working people of Massachusetts. Haynes went on to say, “Whether he’s been fighting greedy CEOs, working to protect pensions, rallying with workers on strike, or being available and accessible to working people’s needs, Bill Galvin is undoubtedly, irrefutably the working families’ candidate for Secretary of State. That’s why we are proud to endorse him and want every voter to know that there is only one candidate for this office who has a track record of standing up and fighting for working people. That candidate is Bill Galvin.” The Massachusetts AFL-CIO hopes that all voters turn out to re-elect Secretary Galvin on his credentials, service, experience, and the fact that his opponent simply does not measure up to him. His opponent has worked for the Green Party, including Ralph Nader’s spoiler presidential campaign that led to George W. Bush’s anti-worker presidency, and accepted contributions from Jill Stein, a candidate for the same office from the Green Party. “Bill Galvin won the Democratic State Convention, is the Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate, and is the working families’ choice for this important office. Looking at the two candidates in this race, there is no comparison. Bill Galvin has been and will continue to be the best Secretary of State we’ve ever had,” concluded Haynes. »
