United Way and IAFF 1099 Build Ramps for Charity
United Way and IAFF Local 1009 Build Ramps for Charity
The Central Massachusetts United Way and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1009 have been donating a great deal of time and energy to build entrance ramps for the handicapped. The United Way and local unions have been involved in the ramp program for over a decade.
In 2006 a retired IAFF member needed a handicap entrance to his home and the United Way and IAFF Local 1009 were there to help. With 100% donated time and labor, the ramp was built in no time and a partnership was formed that would continue to provide wheelchair access for those who could not afford it. In 2007 the United Way and IAFF installed 12 ramps to people who would otherwise have had a great deal of difficulty entering and exiting their own homes. These two generous groups continued on from the success of 2007 by building even more ramps for those in need in 2008, 16 total ramps were installed by these hard working groups.
This project has grown to become a regular charity program. With over 40 ramps installed to date and the number of volunteers only growing it appears as though the ramp installation project will only continue to gain momentum. The United Way and the AFL-CIO have always had a long-standing relationship of cooperation and togetherness, as evidenced by United Way going out of its way for handicapped union members. The AFL-CIO and unions across Massachusetts have supported many endeavors taken under by the United Way, including this ramp installation program. In light of this special relationship, the United Way has recognized Labor as a community partner. To find out more about the partnership between the United Way and organized Labor click here.
