Petition to Save the Boston Globe!

Support The Boston Globe

The following was sent out by the Boston Newspaper Guild on April 29, 2009:

Good Afternoon,

As you know, the New York Times Company has given The Boston Globe unions a May 1st deadline to cut $20 million or the newspaper faces closure.  As the deadline approaches, thousands of readers and supporters from across the country have voiced their support for The Boston Globe.  We thank those of you who have already signed the petition in support of our newspaper and the mission of journalism and free speech.

With the critical May 1st deadline less than two days away, we need your help now more than ever.  The Times Company management must share the burden they have placed on Globe workers and make genuine financial sacrifices to save the newspaper. To date, top executives with the Times Co. have offered little sacrifices of their own. A temporary 5 percent management pay cut would make barely a dent in the lucrative salary and bonus packages of most top Times Co. executives.  Under another scenario being considered, the Times Co. - in addition to threatening to close the Globe - has suggested workers take a devastating 23 percent pay cut.

We are intent on saving The Boston Globe and are asking for your help with four vital initiatives:

  • Sign the petition in support of The Globe if you have not already done so.
  • Ask friends, family and colleagues to sign the petition in support of The Globe.
  • Post the petition link: www.bgol.org/savetheglobe.html to your Facebook or Twitter account.
  • Call New York Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger at (212) 556-1234 and tell him that the Globe belongs to Boston, and that the newspaper is too important a community asset to be shut down.  Let him know that the Times Company must make genuine sacrifices along with Globe workers to save the paper.

The Boston Globe is too critical to the life and culture of this region to be threatened with closure.  Log on to www.SaveTheBostonGlobe.com for more information
