Presumptive GOP Nominee is Wrong on Health Care

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS AFL-CIO

PRESUMPTIVE GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE JOHN McCAIN IS WRONG ON HEALTH CARE

Sen. McCain Wants to Tax Your Health Care Benefits. His plan will create a new tax on working families by making employer-provided health benefits part of taxable income. (Health08.org, Forum, 10/31/07.)

Sen. McCain's Plan Jeopardizes Our Health Care. It undermines existing employer-based health care and pushes workers into the private market to fight big insurance companies on their own. Despite a modest tax credit, his plan will increase costs, reduce benefits and leave many with no health care at all. (Kaiser/HRET, Employer Health Benefits 2007 Annual Survey; Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 4/5/06; Los Angeles Times, 11/20/07; Commonwealth Fund, 6/05.)

Sen. McCain Opposed Health Care for Millions of Children. He voted against reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) because he said it covered too many children. He then missed critical votes to provide an additional $35 billion to cover 4 million more children. (H.R. 976, Vote #307, 8/2/07; Vote #353, 9/27/07; Vote #403, 11/1/07; Congressional Record, 8/2/07.)

Sen. McCain Cut Billions from Medicare and Medicaid. He risked health care for seniors and low-income families by voting for billions in cuts to Medicare and $14 billion in cuts for Medicaid. He also supported raising the eligibility age for Medicare and increasing seniors' premiums. (S. 1932, Vote #363, 12/21/05; S. 1932, Vote #287, 11/3/05; SCR 18, Vote #9, 3/17/05; SCR 18, Vote #58, 3/17/05.)

Don't Let McCain UNDERMINE Your Health Care
