Southeastern Central Labor Council Contributes Funds for New Bedford Summer Youth Program
Demonstrating once again how the Labor Movement contributes to the greater community, the Southeastern Central Labor Council played a major role in securing summer jobs for New Bedford youths. The Central Labor Council participated in fund-raising for New Bedford Mayor Lang’s Summer Youth Program which finds employment for the city’s teenagers. The program, which is still accepting applications, has over 153 youths enrolled who will now spend the next six weeks in a variety of jobs ranging from painting fences to picking up trash. The Summer Youth Program is in its third year; and is funded by contributions from both the private sector and public sector. Not only do participants gain work experience, they also learn the value of community service at the same time, a lesson that will last a lifetime. The Southeastern Central Labor Council and its union affiliates raised $8,000 towards the Mayor’s Summer Youth Program, amounting to near 10% of the total funding raised by the city.
