In Support of a Committee on Diversity
WHEREAS, U.S. Department of Labor statistics reveal an increasingly more diverse American workforce; and
WHEREAS, a powerful Labor Movement can be built only through recognition and inclusion of the full diversity of the labor force - including workers of all races, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, citizenship, ethnicity, national origin, native language, and disability; and WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and our affiliates are committed to the civil rights and social and economic justice of all workers; and WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO has always been committed to achieving diversity in its hiring practices and recruitment of volunteers; and WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Strategic Plan makes it a priority of this State Federation to achieve diversity throughout the leadership, staff and broader Labor Movement; therefore be it RESOLVED, that the Massachusetts AFL-CIO adopt a standing Committee on Diversity, whose mission is to develop recommendations for the State Federation on issues of organizing diverse workers, as well as inclusion and diversity within the Labor Movement; and that appointees to the Committee shall include members of underrepresented groups; and be it finally RESOLVED, that the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will transmit a copy of this resolution and other information to all relevant parties to demonstrate its ardent support for diversity at the State Federation and in the Labor Movement.
