In Support of Labor's Role in Economic Development

WHEREAS, economic development is typically defined as using public resources to subsidize business expansion, with little attention to issues of quality of life; and

WHEREAS, organized labor in Massachusetts, and throughout the country, is partnering with community organizations and research institutions to take an active role in shaping economic development policy; and

WHEREAS, the Labor Movement has already taken the lead in passing living wage ordinances, increasing the minimum wage and offering quality worker training; and

WHEREAS, economic development policies affect core union issues such as training, wages, education, infrastructure, benefits and regulations; and

WHEREAS, unions can play a critical role in setting an agenda that attracts, retains and grows businesses that provide family-supporting wages and benefits, career ladders and decent working conditions; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will support labor-community economic development initiatives, which seek to improve the quality of life for all residents, and be it finally

RESOLVED, that the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will transmit a copy of this resolution and other information to all relevant parties to demonstrate its ardent support for labor-community economic development initiatives.
