In Support of Social Security

WHEREAS, Social Security is America's most important and comprehensive family protection system; and

WHEREAS, Social Security is crucial to the economic security of 44 million retired and disabled workers and their dependents, and also the 130 million workers who are insured in case of severe disability and the tens of millions children who are protected in the event of the death of a family wage earner; and

WHEREAS, a number of reckless ideas are being proposed in Congress including a proposal to substitute individual retirement accounts for Social Security; and

WHEREAS, privatization schemes would require major cuts in Social Security benefits, increases in the retirement age and sharp reductions in inflation protections; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Massachusetts AFL-CIO reaffirm our support for Social Security and that we commend our Congressional delegation for their tremendous support of the AFL-CIO's position on Social Security; and be it finally

RESOLVED, that the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will transmit a copy of this resolution and other information to all relevant parties to demonstrate its ardent support for Social Security.
