In Support of the Walk to Cure Cancer

WHEREAS, three out of four families are harmed in some way by the negative and often devastating effects of the disease commonly known as cancer; and

WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO is dedicated to improving the living and working conditions and health status of all working people and raising the standard in workplaces, communities and governments across the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the state AFL-CIO in conjunction with the University of Massachusetts Medical School has established an annual charitable walk-a-thon to support the University of Massachusetts Cancer Research Center, which is named after the Massachusetts AFL-CIO; and

WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO pledged to raise $5,000,000 to the new medical research building on the University of Massachusetts Medical School campus; and

WHEREAS, the annual fund-raiser is named the Massachusetts Walk to Cure Cancer and consisted of a five-mile walk around Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester on September 23rd of this year; and

WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Walk to Cure Cancer was successfully held for the first time on Labor Day, September 6, 1999; and

WHEREAS, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO has raised more than $4,000,000 over the past eight years toward the $5,000,000 goal; and

WHEREAS, the working families of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO agree to assist in raising $5,000,000 for the purposes outlined above. In reaching this goal, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO's extraordinary commitment to the University, the Medical School, and the citizens of the Commonwealth have been honored with the naming of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Cancer Research Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The naming will be in perpetuity and be transportable in the event that the Cancer Research Center may move its physical location at any future time; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Executive Council and its affiliates are dedicated to reaching the goal with the hope that research conducted at the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Cancer Research Center will lead to the eventual curing of cancer; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will transmit a copy of this resolution and other information to all relevant parties to demonstrate its ardent support for the Walk to Cure Cancer.
