As one of the greatest achievements of the union movement, all union representatives and active union members should be well-versed on the elements of just causes. Forcing employers to agree to contract clauses guaranteeing just-cause protections differentiates union-represented workers from the wider workforce, which is chained to the employee-at-will rule.

Whether you are a union member, officer, organizer, or anyone who deals with employee discipline and discharge, this helpful workshop can empower you to be a more informed worker.

This Labor Guild workshop will feature a presentation on the “Seven Basic Principles of Just Cause” by Robert Schwartz, and will be followed by a discussion entitled “Building a Campaign for Just Cause for All,” led by Rand Wilson. Among the important concepts that will be discussed are: lax enforcement, disparate treatment, mitigating circumstances, extenuating circumstances, progressive discipline, double jeopardy, and due process.

Robert Schwartz is a labor lawyer and Labor Guild instructor. He is the author of numerous popular handbooks including Just Cause: A Union Guide to Winning Discipline Cases (available at the workshop at the special price of $10.00). Rand Wilson is the Communications Director at SEIU 888 and a Labor Guild instructor. He is a longtime labor organizer and is currently involved with Our Revolution– working to fix our rigged economy and broken political system.
